A  6-year-old Palestinian boy is stabbed to death. A zoo fire leads to an animal's euthanization.

Fire damaged the meat processing plant run by Chinese-owned Smithfield Foods in Monmouth Monday evening. Crews from nine fire departments were called in to fight the fire.

Champaign fire officials said fire crews would remain at the Alloy Engineering and Casting foundry on the city’s west side on Saturday, to put out any spot fires, following the three-alarm blaze that burned there for more than five hours overnight.  Later Saturday, officials there were eager to begin assessing the damage, and to see what it would take to get the site up and going again.
