Illinois Guard Tate Arrested On Domestic Battery Charge

Illinois point guard Jaylon Tate has been arrested on a misdemeanor charge of domestic battery.  The junior from Chicago was being held in the Champaign County Jail on Saturday, and a bond hearing was scheduled for later Saturday.

Jail records did not indicate whether he has hired an attorney.

State's Attorney Julia Rietz told the (Champaign) News-Gazette that she did not have details about the accusation against Tate.  She says he's due in bond court Sunday morning.

Tate was arrested hours after Illinois (15-19) lost to Purdue 89-58 in the Big Ten Tournament on Friday, effectively ending their season.

In a post on Twitter, Coach John Groce said Tate has been 'indefinitely suspended from all team activities pending legal proceedings and an investigation into allegations.'

He is the third Illinois player to face charges since August.

Darius Paul was dismissed from the team after being arrested in France on a team trip. Leron Black has pleaded not guilty to aggravated assault after an incident at an Urbana nightclub.
