Google announced its plans to take over the James R. Thompson Center, the iconic creation of postmodern architect Helmut Jahn in Chicago’s Loop district.

Successive governors allowed the maintenance backlog to accumulate at the Thompson Center, and the state has been trying to offload it for years.

Google’s announcement comes as tech share prices are down about 30 percent this year.
