Illinois’ First Human West Nile Case in McHenry County

Health officials in Illinois are reporting the state's first human case of West Nile virus this year.

A McHenry County woman in her 50s got sick earlier this month. Illinois Department of Public Health Director LaMar Hasbrouck said Wednesday it's a good reminder to use insect repellent when outdoors, even if it doesn't look like many mosquitoes are out.

The mosquitoes that usually carry West Nile virus aren't very noticeable and are stealthy biters.

Last year was a big year for West Nile in Illinois with 290 human cases and 12 deaths.

Most people infected with the disease have no symptoms, but some may become ill up to two weeks after being bitten. In some people, the virus can cause muscle weakness, inflammation of the brain, paralysis, coma or death.
