U Of I Warns Employees Against Phishing Emails

The University of Illinois is warning of a phishing attack targeting employees on the Urbana campus.

The phishing email pretends to be from Human Resources, and directs employees to a website to confirm a salary increase. But Interim Privacy and Security Officer Joe Barnes said the website is a false one, set up to steal people’s information. It resembles the log-in page often used by U of I employees. But the web address ends in ".ru", which identifies internet servers based in Russia. It also asks employees for a PIN number, which the real employee log-in website doesn’t do.

Barnes said U of I employees should be on the alert for phishing email, and either delete them, or report them to Campus Information Technologies and Educational Services, or CITES.
