EPA Extends Comment Period on Clinton PCB Landfill

Federal environmental officials are giving the public more time to comment on a proposal to bury PCBs at the Clinton Landfill.

The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency says the comment period now will end Aug. 14. It began on March 15.

A public hearing was held in June.

The Clinton Landfill has asked for special permission to store PCBs _ polychlorinated biphenyls _ a now-banned hazardous waste and carcinogen that once was used in manufacturing.

Residents have opposed the plan because the disposal area is above an underground aquifer that provides drinking water to several cities.

Official records can be examined online or at the Clinton PublicLibrary.
