EIU Approves Lowest Tuition Hike Since 1993

Tuition is going up this fall at Eastern Illinois University. But university officials say it’s the lowest increase for the school at Charleston in years.

Under the increase, new students at EIU this fall who have an average 15-course academic load will pay $8,450 dollars for two semesters --- an increase of $120.

Those rates will be locked in for the next four year for new students, under Illinois’ Truth in Tuition Law.

EIU President William Perry says the university will also continue to invest in financial aid programs to help students.

EIU Trustees approved the increases Friday.

The move comes about five weeks after a $198 annual tuition hike was approved at the University of Illinois Urbana campus --- raising a year’s tuition to over $11,800.

Meanwhile, Millikin University in Decatur and Purdue University in Indiana recently announced freezes in their tuition rates.
