Data Breach Revealed by Supervalu, AB Acquisition

Stores in east-central Illinois are not included on a list of grocery and liquor stores owned or franchised by Supervalu Inc. and AB Acquisition LLC, that were victims of a data breach.

Both companies announced in news releases issued Thursday that hackers accessed a network that processes store transactions. Account numbers, expiration dates, cardholders' names and other information may have been stolen.

Supervalu serves as the third party IT services provider for AB Acquisition

Stores in Minnesota, Virginia, Illinois, Maryland and Missouri may have been affected.

Supervalu reports that its impacted Illinois states include Shop ‘n Save stores in the St. Louis Metro East, Springfield and Peoria areas and Cub Foods in Freeport. AB Acquisition says it's Jewel-Osco stores are among those that may be affected.

Overall, Supervalu Inc. says the stores that may have been impacted include 180 Supervalu stores, 29 Cub Foods stores and some liquor stores. Besides Jewel-Osco, AB Acquisition also operates Albertson's, Acme Markets, Shaw's and Star Markets stores.

The cards from which data may have been stolen were used at stores between June 22 and July 17.

Supervalu Inc. says that it hasn't determined if any such cardholder data was actually stolen and that there's no evidence of the data being misused, but that it was announcing the data breach out of "an abundance of caution.''
