Bloomington Edge Signs Illini 40-Something

Tim Simpson was one of the Fighting Illini’s top offensive linemen back in the late 1980s and early ’90s. He went on to play with the Pittsburgh Steelers.

Now, at age 43, Simpson has been signed by the Bloomington Edge indoor football team to play in their upcoming season.  The signing comes five years after Simpson’s stint as an offensive line coach for the Edge, when it was known as the Bloomington Extreme.

In a news release, Edge head coach Kenton Carr says Simpson is in “great shape,” due to his continued participation in competitive weightlifting.

As an Illini, Simpson was a team captain and earned Big Ten Conference honors in his final two seasons. He was named one of the top offensive linemen in the history of Illini football in 2008.

The Bloomington Edge begin play in the new Champions Professional Indoor Football League on March 15. Home games are at U.S. Cellular Coliseum.
