University Ends Greece Program Amid Turmoil

Economic turmoil in Greece has forced the University of Indianapolis to close its undergraduate program in Athens.

WISH-TV reports the university announced Wednesday it was no longer accepting students to Indianapolis Athens College and that all undergraduate courses and most graduate courses will end Aug. 31.

University officials say the decision affects 176 students. The university has owned the Athens campus since 2004.

Options for affected students include taking online courses or transferring to the Indianapolis campus or other schools.

Greece is in its sixth year of recession. It has been locked out of international bond markets since 2010 and its economy has been kept afloat by rescue loans from European partners and the International Monetary Fund in exchange for harsh austerity measures.
