U of I Sees Record Number of Applications

A record number of applications have been submitted to the University of Illinois for the coming school year.

The (Champaign) News-Gazette reports (http://bit.ly/123vpiQ) that the number hit 33,178. That's almost 2,000 more than last year.

The newspaper reports that applications were up in all categories - among Illinois residents, out-of-state students and international students.

Stacey Kostell is director of undergraduate admissions.  She says the university is especially happy with the numbers of in-state applicants, which made up slightly more than half of the total.

She says that's seen as a success because it comes at a time when the state's demographics mean there are fewer high school graduates in Illinois this year.

Kostell says making sure students in Illinois still consider the university an option is very important.
