Inspection Signs at C-U Restaurants Now Show When Re-Inspection Required
Between January and May, 32 restaurants in Champaign-Urbana failed health inspections. But despite the Champaign-Urbana Public Health District’s new notification system include , diners still had no easy way of knowing if a restaurant failed --- until now.
The new color-coded placard system began Jan. 1, but health inspectors gave failing restaurants a chance during an inspection to make enough corrections to earn a green placard – which means passing – instead of a yellow placard – which means a failed score and requires re-inspection.
The delay in posting yellow placards was part of what health officials called an education and notification period for restaurant owners.
But that period has ended.
Jim Roberts environmental health director for the Champaign-Urbana Public Health District says that as of July 1st, restaurants must now display the yellow inspection notices that are labeled "Re-inspection Required", when they are issued by an inspector. But no yellow placards had been issued, as of Thursday, July 3rd.
Restaurants that were shut down, however, were still required to post a red placard.
