Group Seeks Re-Drawing Of Legislative Maps By 2022

There’s a petition drive underway that supporters say would go a long ways towards ending political corruption in Illinois.

Yes for Independents Maps wants to re-draw legislative districts to coincide with the 2020 Census, giving that duty to a nonpartisan commission instead of lawmakers.

The group's campaign needs nearly 300,000 signatures over the next nine months for the 2014 ballot item creating the independent commission.  The same process has led to new maps in California, Arizona, New Jersey, and Florida.

Illinois Public Media’s Jeff Bossert talked to Campaign Manager Michael Kolenc, who’s leading the effort behind a fall 2014 ballot item that would make that happen.
