Faith Leaders Emerge As Key To Health Law Outreach

Leaders in some Illinois faith communities are spreading the word about the national health law to make sure those without insurance know about new tax-subsidized coverage and the start of enrollment on Oct. 1.

Nationally, President Barack Obama's administration and advocacy groups are courting leaders of churches, mosques and synagogues to join the outreach effort.

In East Peoria, the Rev. Carole Hoke (hohk) says it's appropriate for her to educate church members about the law because health care justice is an important value in the United Church of Christ.

In Evanston, a United Methodist seminary plans a two-day training for church leaders in early October. It will be streamed live to several Chicago-area churches.

And other faith leaders are holding forums to inform people how the law may affect them.
