70 MPH Sign Installation Delayed Due To Weather

State transportation officials say last week's frigid and snowy weather has delayed crews who were putting up signs along interstates increasing the speed limit to 70 mph.

Illinois Department of Transportation spokeswoman Paris Ervin tells Lee Enterprises Newspapers that there's been a delay. She says that's because recovering from the winter storm was "top priority.''
 
A new law took effect Jan. 1 that increases the maximum speed limit on tollways and interstate highways in Illinois to 70 mph from 65 mph. 

IDOT hoped to install about 900 new 70-mph signs by Jan. 17. State officials have asked drivers not to start driving 70 mph until the new signs are installed.
 
Ervin says the department hopes to install more signs now that the weather has improved.
