Television Show Introduction

Posted Wednesday, June 24, 2009 by Karis Morrall

Romania had one of the fastest-growing economies in the world after it joined the European Union in 2007. However, it all came to a screeching halt when the global financial crisis hit. Tourism is a small part of the economic growth in Romania right now, but they are hoping to change that. They’re working hard now to attract tourists.

The country hopes to diversify its economy by exporting its wines globally. After all, they have been making wine for more than 2,000 years.

But there are parts of Romania where time seems to stand still.

A group of University of Illinois students traveled to Romania to document its progress since the fall of Communism 20 years ago, as part of an International Reporting Class.

Those stories and more on Revealing Romania. This is the first part of an hour-long special.

Roma Community

Posted Wednesday, June 24, 2009 by Karis Morrall

For most Americans, the word ‘Gypsy’ brings to mind a story-book character. Dressed in bright, flowing clothes with elaborate jewelry, the American idea of a Gypsy is a fantasy. In Romania there’s an entire population of people known as gypsies, though their proper name is Roma. It’s a population that has suffered from hundreds of years of discrimination in Romania, and although the government was supposed to make life better for them, the Roma say they have yet to see a change.

Shaina Humphries has the story.

For Love and Money

Posted Wednesday, June 24, 2009 by Karis Morrall

For more than two decades, millions of Romanians have been pouring out of the country in the search of better-paying jobs. Some left with the intention of returning one day, others will never go back. But nearly all of them are sending money to relatives at home. They’re ordinary Romanians making extraordinary sacrifices, for love and money.

Luke Cleary has the story.

Reviving Rural Romania

Posted Wednesday, June 24, 2009 by Karis Morrall

There have been many changes in Romania since the fall of Communism; however, in rural areas, change is slow. Lack of jobs and poor living conditions are just two of the problems plaguing the countryside. With little or no help coming from the government, villagers are on their own.

Jhane Reifstck has the story.

Uncorking Romanian Wine

Posted Wednesday, June 24, 2009 by Karis Morrall

Parts of the Romanian countryside are filled with vineyards. Wine has long been a part of the culture of Europe, but most Americans don’t think of Romania when they consider European wines. They’ve heard of the wines of France, Spain, and Italy; but believe it or not, Romanian wines are poised to make a surge onto the global market. So we went into the Romanian countryside to uncork the story of Romanian wine.

John Paul has the story.

Posted Thursday, June 04, 2009 by Kirstin Skurka

University of Illinois Advertising Professor Diana Mincyte says that branding a country is more than just Internet advertisements and marketing. Romanian people must first understand who they are as a country, and gain confidence as a nation in order to lure people to come visit.

Italy Wine Expert Rates Romanian Wine

Posted Thursday, June 04, 2009 by John D Paul

Prof. Nancy Benson shares wine with PierAlberto Merli at Gustolab

An Italian sommelier, trained and certified in the study of wines, got his first taste of Romanian wine Thursday, thanks to our group.  PierAlberto Merli runs Gustolab in Rome and the Leonardo di Vinci school.  Both units study and teach about the culture surrounding food and drink.  Merli rated the Romanian Merlot he tasted as “good” but lacking the power of an Italian wine.  Merli is shown in the photo above with Journalism Professor Nancy Benson.
